Fabrics
Not all fabrics are created equal. Some play nice and others, well, lets just say they have their personality. And with that personality, there comes some challenges to take into account. For example, when working with velvet, because of the individual fibers, it can’t be ironed like most other fabric, flat down. You need to use a little needle board that keeps the fibers standing tall but allows access to the back of the fabric so those pesky wrinkles are smoothed out. Velvet isn’t the only one that can have some intricacies. Light weight sheer fabrics also need a little attention. To hem light weights, the edges need to be rolled and sometimes this can be a little particular to work with.
With this being said, please allow for extra time to rightly work with certain fabrics so your wardrobe can be created with the best of care.
Fastenings
If you’ve found your fabric or second hand garments that are ready to be transformed, also look for any fastenings (buttons, zippers, closures of any kind) that you would like to use. I’ve found some truly unique closures in thrift stores and consignment shops, especially ones that have a fair amount of vintage wares.
Measurements
If you’re new to the practice of measuring yourself, try grabbing a buddy to help you out. The basic areas I would need measurements for will depend on the type of garment you’re looking to have created or tailored. Please refer this for where to take your measurements. Or if it’s easier, give me a call or email to set up an appointment so we can meet for measurements.
